Pick a Heroine: Megara (a.k.a Meg)
Megara is independent and quick-witted, but also cynical and world-weary, making her atypical among Disney’s lead females. She plays enough of a heroic part in the movie to be classed as a heroine, rather than just a romantic interest. She has a very low opinion of men in general, since her experiences with them are mostly negative. It’s been told that someone she used to love had died (or was ill) and so she sold her sole to Hades so he could revive him. When this man she loved came back to life however, he ran after another woman, leaving Meg alone and owned. Since then, Meg has been skeptical of love. She tries to protect herself from men because she’s afraid of getting hurt again. While Hercules falls for her at first sight, far from falling for him on the spot, she dismisses him as putting on an ‘innocent farm-boy routine’, and it is not until they spend real quality time together that she begins to romantically fall head-over-heels for him. Even when she realizes she’s in love, she still won’t say it out loud. She’s sassy and full of personality. She is one of a kind.
